"We explore bank-specific, industry-specific and macroeconomic determinants of the net interest margin (NIM) of commercial banks in Brazil from 2007 to 2016. Our results confirm prior results and consider two additional sources of banking inefficiencies — the quality of financial information, measured through Earnings management, and the level of loan provisions. Our results suggest that informational inefficient banks translate its costs to customers by increasing its interest margins. Moreover, the effect is stronger when forecasted loan losses are lower than expected. Ownership also plays a role in this inefficiency, with local owned banks having more sensitivity and even lower level of loan provisions than its foreign-owned counterparts."
